DANCE PROGRAM

Graduate Studies

Graduate Studies

The MFA curriculum, known throughout the nation for its excellence, is a rigorous, three-year, 60 credit hour program which includes intensive study of dance technique, choreography, production and theater crafts, music, pedagogy, kinesiology, dance history and other areas of study. The graduate program was established in 1975 and alumni of the program have gone on to contribute to the field of dance in valuable ways. Currently, several hold college or university positions as provosts, chairs, directors or professors of dance. Many are dancing with professional companies or have formed their own companies while some are solo artists.

Every MFA candidate is expected to fulfill the comprehensive requirements and demonstrate a high level of professional standards and scholarship regardless of specific career goals. Candidates may choose to specialize in performance, choreography or teaching. However, each graduate student must successfully produce and present an MFA Thesis concert.

Participation in the Graduate Dance Program

Because of the enormous amount of time required for production and class preparation, part-time participation in the program is not recommended. And, because of the course sequences, it is almost impossible to become comfortably integrated and into the program's dynamic unless work is undertaken in a fall semester.

Typical Program of Study (MA)

Although the Department of Theater and Dance Graduate Programs are geared toward the Master of Fine Arts Degrees, the appropriate candidate may select or be encouraged to direct their graduate studies in pursuit of the Master of Arts Degree, a 30 hour degree program. The focus of the studies may include similar coursework to the Master of Fine Arts while also facilitating particular studies that may be enhanced or assisted by related studies both within the Department of Theater and Dance as well as with other complementary studies in other departments. The candidate's program of study will be uniquely designed by the primary faculty of the designated program (i.e. Acting, Dance or Design) within the Department of Theater and Dance. As required by the School of Graduate Studies, a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.75 must be maintained.

MA candidates must complete a minimum of 30 hours following a recommended program similar to the courses suggested herein. Modifications may be suggested by the principle faculty advisor.

Electives and other Graduate Dance Courses of Interest

The program of study allows for a flexible amount of credit hour ascription for certain dance related courses to accommodate other types of electives. Elective classes are those offered by other university departments. The following classes have a range of credit hours ascribed to them to allow for a flexible program of study, should other areas of investigation be wanted.

Costume Design and Construction for Dance
Lighting for Dance
Special Studies and Projects

A Note about Technique class requirements

Even though the primary thrust of the technique offered in the program is modern, ballet classes are also offered and graduate dance students are encouraged to utilize these classes. Credit hours for all technique range from 1 to 3 credit hours and may be adjusted for each student according to program of study and course load.

Regular Reviews

Participation in the graduate program requires a continual assessment and monitoring of each individuals progress. This is done each semester to assist the student's development. Important considerations about student progress and performance are outlined in the graduate student guidelines.

Application

Having read the Dance Program description, should you wish to make application, please contact the department for application and relevant application materials will be mailed to you. You can also download application materials from the School of Graduate Studies.
