Mather Dance Collective presents their fall dance series during performances November 29 and 30 and December 1 at Mather Dance Center
MaDaCol, a dance collaborative at Case Western Reserve University, presents its fall dance production November 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. and December 1 at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in the Mather Dance Center, 11201 Bellflower Road. The concert features student-choreographed works that put into movement such themes as logic, perspective, imagination and moral fiber.
MaDaCol is a student-directed dance ensemble whose members are students, faculty, staff and community members. Annually, the group stages fall and spring productions of new and revisited works by choreographers.
In her new work, senior undergraduate student, Megan Chirby, investigates character qualities and expression of movement through the bodies of her dancers. Her piece will explore how dancers can advance the development of movement, vocabulary and the influence they have on aspects of the choreography. The choreographer focuses on the ideals of running, climbing and bouncing as the foundation to build upon for her and her dancers.
From Where I Am is a piece choreographed by second-year graduate student Jamie Knurek. Set to music by Carl Vine and Grygori Ligeti, the piece deals with questions concerning truth, empathy and tolerance. Her ensemble of 10 dancers represents her personal insight and understanding of the issues as well as the groundwork on which a new provocative journey awaits.
Choreographed to music by The Cinematic Orchestra, first-year graduate student Sernaz Demirel presents Nobody Is Here, a piece centered on distinguishing nonexistent visions from unmistakable actuality. The imagination can sometimes influence observations, so the work represents the fierce struggle people may experience internally to try and grasp their perspectives, both genuine and artificial, and decipher them.
Jennifer Lakamp, who is also a first-year graduate student, used inspiration from a previous work to create Keep All The Rest In, Never Again. In this work, she digs up the roots of the once aptly entitled "City That Care Forgot," and the pain in irony that is "New Orleans." With the music of Violaine Corradi and Cambridge King's College Choir, featuring Stephen Cleobury, the piece pays homage to the soul of a city as its heartbeat was silenced and its last breath surrendered.
